I have been sidetracked for the past few weeks, and making a post has sort of taken a back seat. Thanksgiving has now passed with wonderful time spent with family, and December has arrived. Along with December, winter has come as well!
Time around “the ranch” has been spent getting final construction supplies to keep us busy on cold days and getting our heating system running. We have been making sure our water supply is ready, getting items put away before snow flies and sort of “battening down the hatches”…as they say.
Yesterday, the temperature on my drive home was a balmy 14 degrees. With the cold setting in and winter bringing snow, a hearty meal was a necessity – Shepherd’s Pie came to mind. I usually whip up a simple version with some ground beef, brown gravy, a few veggies and mashed potatoes. Last night, I was ready for something new. I searched the Food Network app and came across this version from Alton Brown.
A few alterations were made to substitute what was on hand. As two successful hunts are now filling our freezer, I substituted elk for the lamb. I also replaced the potatoes on top with mashed cauliflower so that I could enjoy a few slices of homemade bread from a neighbor.
The final product was delightful and hit the spot on a cold winter’s night. This recipe of Shepherd’s Pie from Alton Brown is a keeper!
